Locks

Locks that are used in houses

Dead Locks

Example:

Front doors, Backdoors

These deadbolts provide very good security & can be installed on almost every wooden door.

Not all deadbolts are the same, if you look at the picture above you will see a full brass bolt with a black dot which is actually a steel harden roll pin that makes the deadbolt very hard to cut through & provides more strength to the bolt.

The barrels (cylinders) are full meal construction, this is important physical security.

Cheaper deadbolt are made from diecast (pot metal), which is hard to spot without opening the package at the hardware store.

Screen Door

Screen doors.

There are two common types of screen doors.

Hinged door & a sliding screen door.

Each type can have a 3 point locking system or just a single point locking.

The main brand is Whitco & these last a long time, other brands are not as reliable, cost more etc.

These locks are often installed from the screen door manufacture with the less secure cylinder AKA “Barrel” which uses the smaller style of key.

This really needs to be replace with the more secure cylinder that uses a normal style key to provide security.

There is no point having a screen door if someone can easily unlock the door.

Handle Locks

Example:

Commercial building,

Unit front doors (Fire door lock)

This handle lock is actually a commercial grade handle lock. These handle locks can be installed on fire ratted doors like found on unit front door or fire stairs in commercial office building or residential multi story buildings. These are designed to be used many times a day & for 20 years or more. If you are looking for a handle lock that will keep on working this is what I use on my house.

Garage doors have many different types of locks & some can be changed to the new style & new keys style that provides more security.  Average life is about 10 years with every day use, the lock does get worn out & the security does degrade. Most are not expensive to replace, a Garage door motor these days is cheap & the lock can be used as a backup when you go away on holidays.

There are a few different types of window locks to match the different styles of windows. The two brands we recommend are  Whitco & Lockwood. Depending where you live it might also be a good idea to use wood to block the window from being opened.
